Simple Lead Fall Breaks Biner

Well this is a scary one, folks. Climbers in Australia are reporting that a simple lead fall at the clipping position for bolt four caused the climber’s bolt three biner to break clean off. There’s an interesting discussion about possible causes on the Chockstone Forum here. Leading theory: glue-in bolts so deeply recessed that they forced the biner to be loaded along its gate edge as opposed to its spine. Luckily no ground fall for the climber, just a scary whip!

Pretty scary.. But a good reminder to check your bolts before clipping. Kind of glad that it doesn’t seem to be the equipment failing.. :)
