Climbing at the Pit, Flagstaff, AZ
When we were heading through Flagstaff we had intended to spend a few days climbing in Jack’s Canyon, Arizona’s premier sport area. Unfortunately the weather conspired against us and April snow was expected to fall. We settled for the town’s local crag, the Petit Verdon “the Pit” and were not disappointed.
The Pit is really close to town, making it an after work or half-day crag. It is all single pitch sport routes on limestone. Difficulty ranges from 5.7 to 5.13c and the rock is high quality limestone. There are lots of pockets but no real tufa flows if that’s what you’re into.
We really enjoyed all the routes we hopped on and there were many more that we would have been excited to do with more time. Overall we found that the Pit delivers a lot for its relatively small size.
How to Get There
Drive out of Flagstaff on Lake Mary Road for about 5.4 miles. Park at Canyon Vista Campground on your left. An obvious trail leads out the back of the campground and turns right down to the crag.
