Palomas Peak, New Mexico

As we were make our way to the Red River Gorge in Kentucky we wanted to get in a few climbing days to break up the trip so looked at potential stops where we could get a day or two of climbing in. Our friend in Flagstaff showed us the Rock ā€˜nā€™ Road Climbing Atlas that has enough info to get you to the crags. As we were thumbing through it we saw a bunch of good looking stops so we penciled some in.

We decided to stop in Albuquerque, NM because there was a crag a little ways outside of town. The area was called Palomas Peak and had about 100 single pitch sport routes ranging from 5.easy to 5.13. The rock is good quality limestone although a bit sharp. You could probably spend a couple days climbing here and be ready to move on.

There is a free guide available here which has all the information you need to get there and climb. Pictures of the parking area and trailhead are below.
