Your Fortune in a Cup of Coffee

Everybody has heard of Turkish coffee. The strong dark brew has become famous around the world. But did you know that your cup of coffee could also tell your fortune? You can learn about your past, present, and future all in one cup. While some cafés in Turkey still have professional coffee readers on staff we had to go it alone.

Here’s what you do.

Step one: Enjoy a delicious cup Turkish coffee, but be sure to drink from only one side of the glass. We opted to enjoy our coffee with a serving of Bal Kaymak—honey and cream. But this wasn’t just any honey and cream. The honey is taken straight from the comb and the cream comes from the restaurant’s own herd of buffalo (see photo). It was incredibly delicious.

Step two: When you finish your coffee place the saucer on top of your cup, hold it at your chest and turn it counterclockwise three times while making a wish. Note: Turkish coffee only has the ability to foresee your future 40 days in advance so wish accordingly.

Step three: Place the cup and saucer on the table so the cup is upside down and allow the coffee to cool completely. You can place a coin on top of the cup to help cool it down and to dispel any bad omens.

Step four: When the coffee is cooled the person whose cup it is will lift the cup away from themselves and give it to the fortune teller to read. While there are certain traditional signs to look for like kites and flying birds, we had a bit of trouble finding any of those but we did find some interesting things.

Here I am discovering what Kyle’s future holds.

I stared at this one for a while then all of a sudden it jumped out at me. Can you see the donkey?

As any good fortune teller does it was now my job to interpret the meaning of this donkey that had appeared in Kyle’s cup. “Kyle, within the next 40 days you will make an ass out of yourself.”

Now on to step five.

Step Five: When you are finished with the cup it is time to read the saucer. The person whose fortune is being read holds the saucer vertically towards the fortune teller allowing the excess grounds to drip off. We couldn’t find anything terribly inspiring in this one, can you?

Step Six: When the saucer reading is finished the person whose fortune is being told turns it over and if a drop of coffee manages to reach half way to the center of the other side of the saucer it signifies that the wish made will come true. Luckily we won’t have to wait more than 40 days to see if it worked.
