Our first day climbing in Finale we went out with our new friend to find some shady climbing. We set out for Boragni, but we missed the parking lot and ended up at Monte Cucco. This area is pretty nice with shade on different walls throughout the day. What sets this area apart is the free camping complete with bathrooms, water and a little pizzeria across the street.
Monte Cucco has more than 250 routes with more than half rated in the 6’s. Having not climbed for the last two months we were a little out of shape. We wanted to start with some easy climbs so we started up a couple 6a’s. It was a little humbling going from 6a warm ups in Ton Sai to not finishing a 6a on our first day out.
We climbed at the wall named Cucco 2 which is a quick 15min walk from the parking lot and has some really great quality rock. The wall has everything from cracks, technical slabs, steep routes to multi-pitch. With transportation into town you could live at this crag for months and not climb everything. This area is definitely worth a visit if you find yourself in Finale. You can find a sample topo of Settore Centrale here. There is a map with the campground and crag locations below.
