Best Route in Minnesota

I don’t know whether it is the fantastic balance and body tension it takes to get up the route or the gorgeous setting, but the Best Route in Minnesota (6c, 5.11a) has quickly taken its place as my favorite climb in Ton Sai. Here on the peninsula, caves and stalactites are a dime a dozen and it is easy to adopt the mentality that everything you reach for will be a jug. What sets this route apart is its unique setting, a razor edge arête bursting out of a huge cave and its excellent selection of crimpers. The original route was established by Todd Skinner in 1993 and has since been rebolted with an added variation at the start and finish. If you only have a short amount of time in Ton Sai this one should be a priority, it is not often that you get the sensation of scaling an ancient castle wall. You can make a day out of it by climbing Best Route in Minnesota in the morning then heading through the cave and rappelling to the base of Thaiwand Wall.
